Environment Improvement
Fast pace of urbanization is obviously effecting some changes in the environment. Municipal Authorities, being the third tier of governance, is entrusted with a huge responsibility to improve the environment in urban areas and ensure that urbanization do not affect the environment. The State Government has provided the Urban Local Bodies with the proper legal tools as well as proper logistic support in this regard.

The State Government has provided he Municipalities with proper guidance for effective Solid Waste Management and providing fund for the purpose; environment friendly building rules with the provisions of use of solar energy, maintenance of green cover in large constructions, recycling of waste water; legal measures for regulating markets and other places of business; help to the Urban Local Bodies to replace the dry latrines; the incentive to the clean cities through a Clean City competition programme; taking up projects like Kolkata Environment Improvement Project to protect the urban environment. It has also been ensured that the general citizens of the municipal areas are also involved in this work through the institutional frame work of Ward Committees in each ward of all Urban Local Bodies.
