Kolkata Environment Improvement Project

Objective:

For the purpose of improvement of drainage system and underground sewerage system for the added areas of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and for the purpose of Slum development within Kolkata Municipal Corporation area Kolkata Environment Improvement Project had been taken up from April, 2002 with the assistance from the Asian Development Bank and Department For International Development (DFID).

Financial Assistance:

ADB loan (Rs,1012 crore), DFID assistance (Rs.193 crore), State Government contribution(Rs.251 crore) and KMC Contribution( Rs.254 crore)

Implementation:

For proper implementation and monitoring of the project, a High Power Steering Committee consisting of representatives of both the State Government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been constituted. Both the State Government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation are paying special attention for proper implementation and timely completion of the project. Under this project, improvement of canals for about 53 kilometres of length and improvement of sewerage and drainage system of a vast area and the work of slum development has been taken up. The DFID assistance is being spent for capacity building and for modernisation of various departments of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The work for Drainage and Sewerage Improvement amounting to nearly Rs. 150 crores around Behala area is about to be taken up. The work of improvement of canals has been started. The development work has also been started in slum areas. On this account an amount of Rs. 11.44 crore has also been sanctioned as share of the State Government. The project will continue till 2007. For proper implementation and monitoring of the project, a High Power Steering Committee consisting of representatives of both the State Government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been constituted. Both the State Government and Kolkata Municipal Corporation are paying special attention for proper implementation and timely completion of the project. So far, an amount of Rs. 46.80 crore has been spent in this project including ADB grant.
