Solid Waste Management Mission
 
 
Disposal and management of solid waste has become a major challenge to the urban planners. To cope up with the challenge State Government has set up Solid Waste Management Mission for the entire State with Municipal Affairs Department as the nodal department. This mission will have the responsibility of guiding the Solid Waste Management Programme for the entire State.

It has a technical Committee with representatives from Environment Department, WBPCB, KMDA and MED. This committee will adopt an approach for ensuring reduction of operational expenditure for this purpose vis--vis setting up an individual project.

It's office is located at the office of the Municipal Engineering Directorate at Bikash Bhavan, Salt Lake.
 
Actions already taken by the Mission are
 
  • An action plan of the Solid Waste Management Mission.
  • Based on the action plan a budget which includes expenditures on preparation if IEC materials, training, capacity building, development of primary collection system, construction of 50 transfer stations, 3 regional landfill sites including composting facility etc.
  • The Ministry of Environment and Forests has been approached for providing initial grant.
  • Office of the Technical Advisory Committee has been set up at MED, Bikash Bhavan.
